Visiting Bertinoro
Bertinoro,a small municipality of the province of Forlì-Cesena, nestles on the slopes of Mount Cesubeo and Mount Maggio, and its territory is crossed by the river Bevano. The city centre is situated halfway between Forlì and Cesena, and develops along the central-northern area of the province, few kilometres far from the ancient Via Aemilia.
Those interested in admiring the extraordinary artistic heritage of the city will have the possibility to stay at the hotels of the old town or the luxury guest houses that are situated a short distance from the famous spa establishments of Fratta Terme. Bertinoro's charming bed and breakfasts and farm houses, that are hosted inside ancient manor houses, distribute admist the sweet hills of the hinterland.
The city centre is dominated by the so-called “Balcone di Romagna”, which is situated just in the heart of Piazza della Libertà and gives visitors the possibility to enjoy breathtaking views over the underlying landscapes. The central square is commanded by the imposing Municipal Palace, which was commissioned by Pino I Ordelaffi, the lord of Bertinoro, in 1306. The 40-metre high building gathers sumptuous halls that are open to the general public, such as the “People's Hall”, which was once used for the popular assemblies, and the "Noble Hall”, which is still the venue for important civic ceremonies and is embellished by precious paintings.
The Municipal Palace is flanked by the sixteenth-century Bramante's style Co-cathedral of St. Caterina. Its interior cherishes outstanding artworks of great value, such as the altar piece depicting St. Caterina d'Alessandria and a precious wood crucifix dating back to the end of 1500.
Bertinoro's most representative landmark is the so-called Colonna delle Anella, a white stone pilaster which rises at the end of the square. The column, which was commissioned by the noble families of the city in 1200, was provided with 12 rings which were used to fasten the horse bridles. The metal rings were different for every family.
The impressive rock spur that dominates the city is topped by a splendid Fortress, that was built around the X century. Surrounded by imposing walls and commanded by 4 high bulwarks, it is the seat of the University Residential Area, and also hosts the important Inter-religious Museum dedicated to the three major monotheistic religions in the world: Christianity, Judaism and Islamism.
