Bazzano, a small municipality of the province of Bologna, nestles on the slopes of the lowest peaks of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and develops along the course of the stream Samoggia. This lovely hilly centre, that extends across the central-western part of the province and a short distance from Modena, develops around the splendid medieval Bentivoglio Fortress.

The upper part of the old village, that is encircled by impressive city walls, is dominated by the imposing Bentivoglio Fortress. The castle, that has a quadrangular plan, was totally restored between 1473 and 1490, and was then turned into an elegant Renaissance residence; anyway, it still retains some defensive architectural elements belonging to the original structure. The building is home to the interesting A. Crespellani Civic Archaeological Museum, that was inaugurated in 1873 and gathers precious archaeological finds and remains coming from the surrounding area.
The castle's complex is complemented by the small Church of St. Stefano, the city's patron saint. This building, that was built around 789, was repeatedly remodelled and restored, but still retains its Romanesque rose window and semi-columns provided with capitals, while there are no evidences left of the original Byzantine structure.
The three merloned gates that lead to the old town are dominated by the XIV-century Clock Tower, that is embellished by a splendid nineteenth-century clock.
Few kilometres far from Bazzano is one of the most beautiful naturalistic parks of Emilia-Romagna, Abbazia di Monteveglio Regional Park.
