Battipaglia is a modern city. It was founded in 1858 by Ferdinand II to provide hospitality to refugees from the nearby Melfi after a terrible earthquake. During World War II, the city was bombed heavily by the Allies and was almost totally destroyed. This is the main reason why Battipaglia is a modern city and has not got an old town, although it is pretty, rational and well-kept.
