Visiting Barberino Val D'Elsa
The small village of Barberino Val d’Elsa, which is part of Florence's municipality, is situated halfway between the homonymous valley and Val di Pesa, and rises on the top of a sweet hill which dominates the northwestern boundaries of the territories of Chianti Classico red wine. Its impressive profile gathering imposing medieval walls and fortifications can be admired driving along the scenic route which connects Florence with Siena (the former Via Cassia which has recently been renamed Statale 2).
Hotels in Barberino Val d’Elsa welcome large numbers of both Italian and foreign tourists, who decide to spend their holidays in this enchanting resort to discover its most representative attractions and highlights. Apart from exploring the picturesque villages included in Barberino's municipal territory, cultural tourists staying at comfortable hotels in Barberino Val d’Elsa will have the possibility to visit Florence and Siena, which are situated only few kilometres far from it and can be easily reached through fascinating paths which develop amidst sweet hills and enchanting landscapes. Both Barberino Val d'Elsa and the nearby hamlets are scattered with intimate bed and breakfasts and charming holiday farms, which are idyllically set just in the heart of fairy-tale sceneries.
The grey local stone, which acquires lighter shades when illuminated by sunlight, is a traditional architectural pattern which is largely employed in Tuscany, Florence and the picturesque villages which surround Barberino Val d’Elsa. Apart from embellishing medieval fortifications and well-preserved gates, this light sandstone was largely used to build the most ancient part of the village, such as the facades of sumptuous palaces dating back to the fourteenth century and the Renaissance, which once hosted important popes and lords. Among the most interesting monuments, not to be missed are Palazzo del Cardinale, Palazzo Pretorio and the former Spedale dei Pellegrini, which now hosts the municipal library.
Leaving the city centre behind, tourists will have the possibility to walk along ancient paths which cross enchanting landscapes, drive to the top of sweet hills which are covered with high cypresses, ancient vines and olive groves and lead to thick woods and impressive rock formations which hide enchanting villages. Among these, not to be missed are Sant’Appiano and its ancient Baptistry and Romanesque Parish Church, Petrognano, which rises over the remains of the ancient city of Semifonte, Tignano, which has retained its original walls for over 1000 years, Vico and its sumptuous stately homes, Linari, Poneta, Marcialla and Monsanto, which all cherish incredible landscapes and outstandig historic-artistic beauties.
