The entrance to the ancient citadel is dominated by a huge stone ogival door, which is one of Arpino's most representative landmarks, while the centre of the acropolis is occupied by a high tower. In the Middle Ages, the acropolis was known as Civitas Ciceroniana, because it was said to host the native house of Cicero. Today, researchers have agreed that the great writer and politician was born in the villa over which the church of St. Domenico was erected in the Middle Ages, that is situated on the outskirts of the city.
