The city's most representative church is the huge Collegiate Church of St. Maria Nascente, that was commissioned by Cardinal Federico Borromeo. Its sober Renaissance facade is dramatically offset by sumptuously decorated interiors rich in history and art. The high altar is embellished by a famous polyptych by Gaudenzio Ferrari.
Arona's major symbol is the so-called San Carlone, a huge monumental complex dedicated to St. Carlo Borromeo, who was born there in the sixteenth century. Not to be missed in the surrounding area are Angera Castle, Verbania and Mount Mottarone, the latter being a real paradise for excursionists. The lovers of nature won't miss the opportunity to visit the enchanting Lagoni Park and the Special Natural Reserve of Dormelletto Cane Thicket.
