Ariccia, a lovely municipality of the fascinating Roman castles area, develops just in the heart of the gentle Albani Hills. Its city centre extends along Via Appia, halfway between the cities of Castel Gandolfo and Genzano, and is situated a short distance from Lake Albano and Lake Nemi.

Ariccia's enchanting old town rises on the top of the gentle local hill that separates two wooded valleys. The monumental entrance to the city is dominated by the beautiful Ariccia's Bridge, an impressive structure featuring three superimposed rows of arches that was built in the nineteenth-century to improve practicability along the ancient Via Appia. On the left of the bridge is the sumptuous Palazzo Chigi, that was totally restored in the Seventeenth century by the great architects Bernini and Fontana and is currently the seat of important exhibitions and displays. Open to the general public, it gathers many sumptuous halls and is surrounded by a lush outer park. Some rooms still retain the original seventeenth-century furnishings, as well as plenty of precious paintings coming from the famous Palazzo Chigi in Rome.
The city's two most important churches are St. Maria dell’Assunzione and the Sanctuary of St. Maria di Galloro, the latter being designed by Bernini and built in the Seventeenth century. On December 8, the sanctuary hosts the so-called "signorina" famous procession, that is traditionally led by a girl that is appointed by local citizens.
Ariccia is situated a short distance from further important tourist resorts of the surrounding area, such as Genzano, Grottaferrata, Latina and Castel Gandolfo. Not to be missed are Lake Albano and Lake Nemi, that develop around the craters of extinct volcanos. Gourmets won't miss the opportunity to taste Colli Albani DOC wine and the typical Ariccia's porchetta.
