Arenzano, a small municipality of the province of Genoa, extends halfway between the sea and the local Appenine peaks, and nestles in the heart of a wide inlet of the Western Ligurian Riviera that is delimited by Capo San Martino. The city's most important sacred building is the Parish Church of St. Nazario and Celso, that was erected in 1700 according to the architectural canons of the Baroque style. Its interior cherishes precious frescoes, that concentrate in the vault and presbytery, splendid altars and sumptuous marble sculptures. Not to be missed is the Sanctuary of Child Jesus of Prague, that was erected at the beginning of the twentieth century and still attracts large numbers of pilgrims. Its monumental polychrome marble facade is surmounted by a golden statue depicting Child Jesus of Prague and commanded by a high marble column that rises in the middle of the church square.
Walking down the sea front of the so-called Boera Coastline, that extends a short distance from the Sanctuary of Child Jesus of Prague, it is possible to admire the local Saracen Tower, a typical example of military building that was erected in the X century to defend the coast against the pirates.
The splendid Villa Pallavicino - Negrotto Cambiaso, the current seat of the city's town hall, is surrounded by a lush garden. The palace, that was originally the residence of noble people from Genoa, was commissioned by marchese Tobia Pallavicino in the sixteenth century. The surrounding park, that is open to the general public, hosts a beautiful Art-nouveau greenhouse. Designed by the architect Lamberto Cusani from Parma, it was largely made of iron and glass. Another interesting Art-nouveau civic building is the eighteenth-century Villa Figoli, that is surrounded by a 35,000 square metre-large Italian-style garden.
