Arcore, a small municipality which is situated in the province of Monza and Brianza, is located few kilometres north east of the regional capital. The privileged position of this resort, which overlooks the lush Valley of the river Lambro, has made it the ideal holiday destination of well-to-do Lombard families since the XVI century. Over the course of the twentieth century, several important industries were founded in the surrounding territory. Among these, not to be missed are Gilera and Peg Perego.

The lush area which develops along the banks the river Lambro is peppered with splendid villas and sumptuous manor houses, which were commissioned by noble families from Lombardy between the sixteenth and the nineteenth century. The most famous ones are Villa Giullini-Casati-Stampa, which has recently been dubbed Villa San Martino, Villa La Cazzola and Villa Borromeo d’Adda.
Villa San Martino, which is famous all over the world as the residence of Silvio Berlusconi, was founded in the XVI century, and was originally inhabited by the owners of the local farm who managed the whole landed property. It was turned into a stately home in the eighteenth century, when it was totally renovated according to the canons of the Neoclassical style.
The second most important stately home in Arcore is Villa  Borromeo d’Adda, which is now the seat of the local municipality. The spectacular architectural patterns which characterize the complex derive from the merging of two pre-existing buildings. The large park which surrounds the villa is open all year round, while the oldest part of the structure can be visited on the occasion of the so-called  "Ville Aperte della Brianza" initiative only.
Since 2007, the park of Villa Borromeo D’Adda has hosted the Palio of Sant’Eustorgio, a challenging competition which takes place among several municipal hamlets. Some of the city's most appreciated cultural initiatives are Arcore Street Festival, the popular street art festival which takes place in early June across the main streets of the city centre, and Cioccoarcore, the tempting chocolate tour which stops here in early spring.
