Visiting Arcola
Arcola, a small municipality of the province of La Spezia, is idyllically set amidst the sweet Lunigiana hills, that separate the Gulf of La Spezia from the valley of the river Magra. This lovely hilly centre, that extends 9 kilometres far from the provincial capital, is situated a very short distance from the enchanting Montemarcello-Magra Regional Natural Park .
Hotels in Arcola, that are situated just in the heart of the old town, gather comfortable bedrooms that are furnished with style and provided with modern comforts and excellent services and facilities. The local guest houses, that distribute admist the sweet hills of the lower valley of the river Magra, make the ideal base for reaching the compelling beaches of the famous Gulf of Poets. Arcola's farm houses, that are surrounded by lush vineyards and glorious landscapes, are the ideal accommodation facilities for those interested in spending pleasant naturalistic holidays here while experiencing a closer touch with nature.
One of the city's most representative religious architectures is the splendid Sanctuary of Nostra Signora degli Angeli, that was built around the half of the XVI century. This sumptuous Baroque building cherishes a precious wooden statue depicting Our Lady of the Rosary and a beautiful altar piece by Andrea Podenzana (1688). The sanctuary is flanked by the Parish Church of St. Nicolò, that was totally remodelled and rebuilt according to the canons of the Baroque style in the XVII century. This sumptuous church has a nave and two aisles that are separated by huge Etruscan-style marble columns. It is flanked by a high bell tower.
The city's medieval village is dominated by the ancient Obertenghi Castle, that was realized at the beginning of the XII century and was then turned into a feudal palace in 1320. The ancient structure, that is now the seat of the local municipality, still retains its central body and X-century pentagonal Obertenga Tower. This 25 metre-high bulwark, that is crowned by splendid Guelph merlons, is one of the most important architectures of the historical Lunigiana.
The lovely hamlet of Baccano, that is situated 2 kilometres far from Arcola, is home to the wonderful "il Chioso" Villa, that was erected around the half of the XVIII century. The palace, that was commissioned by the Counts Picedi Benettini, is surrounded by a lush park delimited by imposing walls. On the first September Sunday, the famous Polenta Festival and "Arcola's wine Review", that are the most important food and wine appointments of the whole province, are arranged here.
