Visiting Anagni
Anagni is an important tourist, farming and industrial centre that develops along Via Casilina, halfway between Rome and Frosinone. It is also known as the City of Popes, since it was the native town of many popes and an important papal residence during the Middle Ages. This famous historical city boasts an outstanding artistic heritage of great value.
Anagni is scattered with plenty of modern and comfortable hotels. The local guest houses give tourists the possibility to spend pleasant holidays here while taking advantage of modern comforts and well-kept spaces. The city's farm houses are the ideal accommodation facilities for gourmets and the lovers of food and wine culture. Anagni is also peppered with modern residences and well-kept vacation homes.
Walking down the streets of the old town, tourists will have the possibility to plounge into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, since every corner is dotted with sumptuous churches, houses and monuments. The city's major road, Via Vittorio Emanuele II, is flanked by numerous thirteenth- and fourteenth-century buildings rich in charm and fascination, such as the splendid thirteenth-century municipal palace, that is now open to the general public. The city's most important palace is Palace Boniface VIII, where the notorious “outrage of Anagni” took place. Boniface VIII, the Pope who was slapped, was born in Anagni and loved living in his palace. Today, the building is open to the general public and is home to the important Museum of Boniface VIII and Southern Latium.
Anagni's tour culminates with the visit of the Cathedral of St. Maria, that is one of the most important churches of the Italian Middle Ages. The precious sculptures it cherishes, such as the beautiful ciborium and the bishop's throne, are complemented by the inestimable paintings of the crypt, that was even dubbed “The Sistine Chapel of the Middle Ages”. Its outstanding vaults were frescoed by a mysterious anonymous painter who worked in the first half of the XIII century.
Apart from its history and art, Anagni is also famous for its typical cuisine, amazing events and glorious countryside. Not to be missed are the important historical parades that are held in August to celebrate St. Magno, the city's patron saint, and last ten days. Anagni is also situated within a short driving distance from Subbiaco, Frosinone, Fiuggi and Rome.
