Amalfi's old town gathers two beautiful squares which boast breathtaking views over the rocky valley which hosts the city. They are Piazza Flavio Gioia and Piazza Duomo, the latter being home to one of the city's most representative monuments, that is to say the Duomo dedicated to St. Andrea Apostolo. An ancient place of worship, it dominates the homonymous square with its long staircase and beautiful eighteenth-century fountain of St. Andrea. At the end of the stairs, an elegant porch surmounts the church's wonderful Gothic facade, whose tympan hosts a beautiful mosaic depicting Christ on the throne. The church is flanked by an original bell tower which dates back to the XIII century. The interior of the Duomo boasts precious Baroque decorations, but also gathers some original artistic patterns dating back to the Middle Ages. Next to the Church is the famous Chiostro del Paradiso, a thirteen-century masterpiece of sculpture and architecture which is one of Amalfi's most representative landmarks. Under the Church, a fascinating Crypt hosts a monumental statue depicting St. Andrea, which was realized by Michelangelo Naccherino, and the Saint's relics.
Piazza Duomo is connected with both Amalfi's Eastern and Western Quarters, which are known as Ruga Nova Mercatorum. The whole city is crossed by picturesque narrow streets and winding lanes, which contribute to the make the local town layout a very peculiar one.
Once past the city centre in the direction of Atrani, the local cliffs are dominated by the so-called Amalfi Tower, an ancient fortress which was erected to protect the city against Saracen attacks.
