Altopascio is an important industrial centre and commercial hub of the province of Lucca. The city originally developed around the Hospital of Altopascio, that in the Middle Ages welcomed pilgrims who travelled to Rome along the ancient Via Francigena. Altopascio's old town is still dominated by the ancient Hospital, that still retains its original structure. Its thirteenth-century cloister overlooks Piazza Ospitalieri, that in turn hosts the splendid fifteenth- and sixteenth-century buildings of the so-called Fattoria Medicea. The Hospital of Altopascio has always been managed by the prestigious congregation of “Cavalieri del Tau”, that now operates in  many countries throughout Europe.
Another monument worthy of mention is the Church of St. Jacopo, Cristoforo and Eligio, that still retains part of its medieval structure. It boasts sumptuously decorated interiors, and is flanked by a fascinating bell tower. Built in the thirteenth century, the bell still plays “La Smarrita”, an ancient medieval tune that was once played at sunset to help those travelling through the wood find their way.
Altopascio is also known for its bread and fine wines. Together with the nearby Montecarlo, it produces fine DOC Colline Lucchesi grapes and wines. The most famous wines of the surrounding area are Montecarlo DOC red and white wines.
