Altamura's fascinating farm houses make the ideal base for undertaking exciting excursions across the National Park of Alta Murgia and the karst areas of the surrounding resorts, such as the doline of Pulo di Altamura.

Altamura boasts ancient origins: the region was settled in the Middle Bronze Age, as evidenced by the necropolises and barrows which still distribute across the whole territory. The city was named after the monumental city walls which were erected between the VI and the III century B.C., the remains of which can still be observed in some areas. In the Middle Ages, the ancient village was settled by several ethnic groups, who founded the so-called claustri, picturesque squares which were realized according to the canons of the Arab and Greek architectural styles.
The huge Cathedral of Altamura, which is one of the most appreciated imperial churches in Apulia, was commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia. Erected in 1232, this impressive building was realized according to the canons of the traditional Apulian-Romanesque style, and was embellished with outstanding Gothic decorations.
The city's oldest civic palace is the XV-century Palazzo Del Balzo-Viti, which is embellished by a wonderful portal ornated with small columns and surrounded by an elegant portico. The fortified farms which distribute across Altamura's glorious countryside bear witness to the fundamental role agriculture and sheep-breeding played across the territory; furthermore, they also suited defensive purposes, since they were provided with impressive towers and machicolations.
The lovers of archaeology won't miss the opportunity to visit the cave of Lamalunga, where extensive excavation works unearthed the so-called Man of Altamura, a well-preserved skeleton dating back to the Paleolithic Age, and the cave of dinosaurs, which stands out as the largest deposit of fossil remains in Europe.
