Alia is especially famous for its Gurfa Caves, the spectacular rural caves that distribute across the mountains of the city. Dug into the local red sandstone, they distribute on two levels and are subdivided into several rooms. The major cave, that is structured according to the typical patterns of beehive tombs, reaches the height of 16 metres. Gurfa Caves are outstanding prehistorical finds of great value. The whole complex dates back to the Copper Age, that is to say 4000 – 5000 years B.C.
