Visiting Alcamo
Idyllically set just in the heart of the Gulf of Castellammare, the small Sicilian municipality of Alcamo, which is part of the province of Trapani, nestles on the slopes of Mount Bonifato halfway between Trapani and Palermo. Its name derives from the Arab word meaning “fertile soil”, which is the ideal definition for this territory, which is famous all over the world for its wines, olive groves, cereals and melons.
Both Arabs and further populations left precious historic-artistic evidences here. This inestimable heritage of artworks and majestic architectures, together with the fact the city overlooks a compelling sea and gathers comfortable hotels and guesthouses, made Alcamo an internationally-renowned holiday destination which is able to suit even tourists' most demanding requirements. The comfortable hotels situated along the coast offer guests intimate spaces and high-quality services and facilities, and so do the intimate bed and breakfasts which are situated a short distance from the city's major attractions and highlights. Those interested in experiencing a closer touch with nature will have the opportunity to stay at welcoming holiday farms, which are surrounded by lush vines and olive groves.
The city centre develops across Alcamo's hilly landscape, which cherishes the city's most important monuments and artworks. Among these, not to be missed are the precious remains which date back to the Feudal Age, when Alcamo was taken over by the Ventimiglia Family and the Counts of Modica. The remains of Ventimiglia Castle, which is situated on the top of Mount Bonifato, bear witness to the important role played by this important family of feudal lords. The Modica Family commissioned the building of the residence in the XIV century; it was erected just in the heart of the city centre, over the remains of an ancient castle which once rose on the slopes of Mount Bonifato. The so-called Modica Castle, a majestic structure featuring both square and round towers, still retains its original aspect and is now used to host interesting events and cultural initiatives.
A short distance from it are the church of Collegio and the church of St. Oliva, which both dominate the central Piazza Ciullo. This square is Alcamo's major gathering place and is dedicated to the most acclaimed exponent of local culture, the poet Ciullo d’Alcamo, who lived here in the XIII century.
Alcamo's major streets and squares are all scattered with further impressive churches, such as the church of St. Paolo and Bartolomeo, which is Alcamo's major example of Baroque art and architecture, and the so-called Chiesa Madre, which is situated just in the heart of Piazza 4 novembre. It still retains parts of the ancient fourteenth-century structure and its interior cherishes precious artworks of great value.
Excursionists will have the opportunity to visit Alcamo's compelling beaches, which overlook one of the most beguiling seas in Italy and feature utmost tranquillity and wild patterns, and the top of Mount Bonifato, which rises 825 metres above sea level. A scenic route departing from the slopes of the mountain leads up to the thick wood which covers the peak. It lurks the remains of the Ventimiglia Castle and the chapel of Madonna dell’Alto. On the slopes of the Castle are the remains of the so-called Funtanazza, an ancient Arab tank .
Last but not least is the tour of the cellars and farms which produce Bianco d'Alcamo DOC Wine.
