The city's most representative landmark is the Norman Castle, an imposing four-story quadrangular structure that dominates the central Piazza Umberto. Its interior is home to the Archaeological Musuem of Mount Etna, the Contemporary Art Gallery, the Crafts Museum, the Picture Gallery and the Historical Archives.
The Church and Convent of St. Lucia are part of a huge architectural complex that was erected in 1596. The peculiar facade of the church gathers three architectural orders, and it is flanked by two high bell towers surmounted by huge quadrangular domes. Its interior boasts splendid Rococo choir stalls, a precious painting depicting St. Lucia led to martyrdom, fine ceiling decorations and prestigious altar paintings. The convent is currently home to some schools.
A short distance from the city centre is the medieval Castle of Solicchiata, a huge lava stone building that is surrounded by a deep moat and is only accessible through a drawbridge.
