Visiting Acqualagna
Acqualagna, which is situated in the province of Pesaro - Urbino, nestles just in the heart of the famous Gola del Furlo. It is known all over Italy as the homeland of truffles, and the major centre for its production. It is surrounded by enchanting natural settings, such as the Gola del Furlo and the Catria-Nerone Consortium of Municipalities.
Acqualagna gathers a remarkably wide array of accommodation options, which range from luxury hotels to cheap guest houses. Both the city centre and the surrounding area are punctuated with charming farm houses. The local intimate bed and breakfasts are the ideal accommodation facilities for couples interested in spending romantic weekends here.
The city centre clusters many interesting historical monuments. One of the city's most representative sacred buildings is the Church of St. Lucia. Over the course of the centuries, this ancient building has repeatedly been remodelled; the last restoration dates back to the XIX century. Not to be missed is the important Marian Pelingo Sanctuary, which cherishes a precious fresco depicting the Madonna and Child.
Another building worthy of mention is the VIII-century Abbey of St. Vincenzo. The original abbey was erected over the remains of a pre-existing pagan temple. It subsequently underwent substantial enlargements, and achieved the current aspect in 1271, when it was totally remodelled.
The lovers of archaeology won't miss the opportunity to visit the remains of the ancient Roman Villa di Colombara.
The so-called Palazzo del Gusto (Palace of Taste) was founded in order to enhance Acqualagna's typical products and local staples. It is hosted inside Palazzo Conti, just in the heart of the city centre, and gives tourists the possibility to take part in interesting activities. They can undertake amazing “food and wine itineraries”, or look at famous chefs while preparing tasty typical dishes. It also hosts a Food and Wine Library and a well-stocked cellar, which is largerly built of local Furlo stone, the so-called “Red Stone Cellar”.
The lovers of nature and outdoor activities will have the possibility to visit the enchanting Furlo Natural Reserve, which provides the ideal habitat for rare species of animals and plants.
