The province of  Viterbo, which is situated in northern Latium, is scattered with precious historical finds and interesting cultural sights. Apart from Viterbo itself, the whole province is peppered with fascinating centres featuring outstanding artistic beauties, enchanting landscapes, important archaeological sites and genuine food and wine traditions.
Situated just across the border with Tuscany, Viterbo's coastline is the extension of the Maremma plain, the so-called Maremma Laziale.

Here lies the charming resort of Tarquinia, an ancient Etruscan settlement which still retains one of the best preserved archaeological sites in the world.

Viterbo's environs too are scattered with precious Etruscan and Roman ruins, even if the city achieved utmost splendour during the Middle Ages, when it became the papal seat and experienced its golden age. A short distance from the old town are the famous Spas of the Popes, precious springs which were discovered by the Etruscans and were attended by the popes. They are the most famous thermal springs in the province of Viterbo.
