Guidebooks Macerata

The ancient city of Macerata is scattered with outstanding works of art and architectural beauties which bear witness to the glorious vicissitudes the city has experienced since the Middle Ages. One of the most important buildings in the city is the ancient university, which was founded seven centuries ago but is still one of the most important academies in Central Italy.

A short distance from Macerata's city centre, extensive archaeological excavations unearthed precious evidences, items and tools dating back to previous ages. The ruins of Helvia Ricina cherish the remains of a large Roman settlement, which is said to be the original core of the current city of Macerata. Further interesting archaeological sites are Matelica, Septempeda and Urbs Salvia, which are all situated few kilometres far from Macerata.

Apart from artistic and architectural beauties, Macerata also boasts a lively and dynamic atmosphere. Students often arrange absorbing activities, and interesting events are regularly held at the local Sphaeristerium, which attracts both Italian and foreign tourists who flock here to listen to classical music or attend amazing sporting events, music shows and theatrical representations.

Sphaeristerium of Macerata
The Sphaeristerium of Macerata, a large open-air stadium situated just in the heart of the old town, was built in 1829 as the courtfield for pallone col bracciale and a place for public spectacles and bull fights. Thanks to its surprisingly good acoustics and attractive shape, the Sphaeristerium has hosted concerts of classical music since the early '900, and its opera festival has been included in the most important international circuits for over forty years. The Sphaeristerium also stages concerts of pop music, theatrical representations, ballets and absorbing cultural events. (more)...
