Latina and the main centres of its province were founded in 1930, after the extensive land reclamation which was carried out across the marshes of Agro Pontino. Since then, the provincial territory has enlarged, and new urban areas have developed towards the coast, the latter being an important environmental and tourist resource.

The enchanting seaside resorts of Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo, Sperlonga, Terracina and Gaeta and the wonderful Pontine Islands, the latter being situated just in the heart of the Gulf of Gaeta, attract large numbers of tourists. Along the coast, halfway between Anzio and Terracina, is the lush Circeo National Park, which provides a rich habitat for rare species of animals and plants which once populated the so-called  “Wood of Terracina”.

Mountain lovers flocking to the hinterland of Latina will have the opportunity to reach Mounts Lepini, where impressive karstic phenomena gave birth to natural caves and wells which are currently used to produce Mozzarella di Bufala DOP, or to walk along enchanting footpaths which snake across outstanding natural settings and charming villages.
