Guidebooks Ascoli Piceno
A province of considerable cultural interest, Ascoli Piceno occupies the southernmost part of the Marches. Ascoli's old town, which is largerly built of local travertine, is situated in a privileged panoramic position. Walking down the streets of the city centre, tourists will have the opportunity to discover the ancient history of the city, which was founded by the Piceni tribe in the VII century BC. The ancient streets and squares of the city centre are peppered with medieval towers, Roman ruins, Renaissance churches and Art-Nouveau palaces which contribute to give it utmost profusion.
The province of Ascoli Piceno is scattered with plenty of travertine quarries, from which this important raw material is extracted and employed in the production of local handicrafts.
Heading towards the hinterland, the central Apennines which separate the Marches from Umbria are home to the large National Park of Mounts Sibillini, an enchanting protected area which offers tourists the possibility to go walking, horse riding or cycling while enjoying a closer touch with nature.

| National Park Mounts Sibillini |
| The Sibillini Mounts, which give their name to the homonymous National Park, are part of the central Apennines which extend between the Marches and Umbria. The highest peaks are situated at an altitude of 2500 metres. The unspoiled natural landscapes of the park are crossed by plenty of charming footpaths and historical itineraries leading to ancient medieval villages which still retain their original aspect and attract large numbers of visitors.
