Modena
is both a provincial capital of Emilia Romagna and archbishop's see. It
is situated 34 meters above sea level and has 175.124 inhabitants. The
landscape is dominated by two towers: the Clock Tower and the
Ghirlandina.
There are many four-star hotels which provide excellent accommodation. Who decides to stay in Modena can choose among hotels with garage and three-star hotels provided with car park.
Modena was an important ducal capital for two centuries and a half and rose to Medieval prominence on the back of the arrival of the d'Este nobles from Ferrara in 1598. Modena's superlative Cathedral rises in Piazza Grande. One of the region's greatest Romanesque buildings, it was founded in 1099 and forms a
monumental complex together with its
three apses and the impressive church tower called Ghirlandina .
Northwest of the Duomo, and reached through an attractive warren of old streets, is Palazzo dei Musei (Palace of the Museums). This eighteenth-century building is now home to the city's best museums and galleries. Its finest section is the Galleria Estense, given over to the d'Este private art collection. Among the permanent displays in the d'Este Library are dozens of fascinating maps and diplomatic letters. Not to be missed is the Estense Lapidary
Museum, built in 1828 and currently closed for restoration. A popular
tourist mecca is the Civic Museum of Medieval and Modern Art and
History, which gathers works of sacred art, weapons, musical instruments,
fabrics, embroideries, medals and paintings in the Campori Gallery. An
outstanding place to visit is the Archaeological Ethnologic Civic
Museum which cherishes prehistoric collections, finds dating back to
the Iron Age, ceramics from the Roman Age and funerary sets from New
Guinea, Amazzonia and Africa.
The fourteenth-century church of San
Agostino, which was founded in 1338 and has then been used for the ducal
funeral services since 1664, hosts two wonderful paintings: the Deposition from the Cross by Antonio Begarelli and the Madonna and Child by Tommaso da Modena.
Modena is also famous for its sparkling and straight Lambrusco wine
(Lambrusco wine from Sorbara, Lambrusco Grasparossa wine from Castelvetro
and Lambrusco Salamino wine from Santa Croce), its tasty tortellini, the typical zampone and the balsamic vinegar produced in Spilamberto.
Last but non least the motor tradition which made Modena famous all over the world thanks to the Ferrari produced in Maranello.
