The Amalfi Coast, one of the most appreciated seaside resorts in Italy, is a stretch of coastline overlooking the Gulf of Salerno which extends from Vietri sul Mare in the east up to Positano in the west. Skirting the southern flank of Sorrento's peninsula, it features an indented coastline cherishing small villages which still retain the original fascination of ancient urban settlements which once perfectly integrated with the surrounding landscape featuring both mountains and plains which jut out into the sea.

Situated on the slopes of the surrounding mountains, the most beautiful resorts of the Amalfi Coast boast outstanding views over the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Salerno and the whole of the coast, which features rocky slopes falling sheer to the sea and other breathtaking natural sceneries.

The most ancient and important centre, the one which gives the whole of the coast its name, is Amalfi, the first Seafaring Republic in Italy which experienced utmost prosperity around the year 1000 as an important trade centre in the Mediterranean. The city still retains its past fascination thanks to some historic and artistic monuments and to its small houses leaning against the rock, which lead to the sea crossing the Valle dei Mulini (Valley of the Mills) and are connected by means of characteristic narrow streets. It is a privileged destination for those who decide to spend their holidays at an hotel in the Amalfi Coast for its peculiar town layout and the privileged position of its beaches, all overlooking the beguiling waters of the Gulf of Salerno.

Crossing the scenic roads which wind across the mountains and the coastline both east and west, it is possible to discover marvellous points of interest where natural beauties are complemented by outstanding man-made delights.

Positano, situated west in the Amalfi Coast, is the most representative example of how public works contributed to improve the appearance of a small village situated halfway between land and sea. The city centre has leant against a steep slope since the times it was founded as a fishing village. The beautiful white houses which surround the small cove can be admired both during the day, lying on the beautiful beaches of the resort, and at night, when the whole village lights up.

Another interesting sight situated east is the charming town of Ravello, an elegant and fine resort situated on a terracing between the valleys of the rivers Dragone and Reginna, the prime vantage points being its panoramic gardens which have the best views over the eastern Amalfi Coast. A thriving centre which dealt with shipping trade with both Sicily and the East, Ravello enjoyed great prosperity between the 11th and 13th century. One of the privileged destinations to spend a holiday at an hotel in the Amalfi Coast, Ravello combines history, art and nature, while retaining its past fascination and intimate atmosphere.

Not to be missed are other charming small centres situated along the Amalfi Coast, such as Furore, Nerano, Praiano and Conca dei Marini.
